AI Dungeon is the ancestor. In 2019 Nick Walton hooked GPT-2 to a text-adventure frame - you type actions, the model narrates consequences, forever, with no map, no script, and no rails - and gave the public its first real conversation with a large language model, two full years before chat interfaces made that ordinary. For a while it was most people's first contact: the first time you typed something impossible and the machine, instead of refusing, said yes, and then.
The house style of early AI Dungeon is burned into internet memory: total improvisational commitment plus total amnesia. You could fight a dragon, and the dragon would become a wizard, and the wizard your father, and your sword a boat, and the game agreed enthusiastically with all of it. Players learned to treat incoherence as a physics - the famous greater-than prompt taught a generation the difference between doing and saying before prompt engineering had a name.
Its history is also the industry's history in miniature: the scramble from GPT-2 to GPT-3 as capabilities jumped; the content-moderation crises of 2021 that prefigured every alignment debate since; the migration to its own models; a decade of continuous operation while the technology underneath it transformed twice. It is still running today, multiplayer and image generation and all, which makes it one of the very few first-generation LLM products still alive at its original address.
Every chat assistant, every roleplay bot, every infinite-game in this collection descends from the moment AI Dungeon said yes, and then to a teenager typing kiss the dragon.
