Electric Sheep is the oldest continuously running collective AI artwork on Earth. Since 1999 - before GPUs, before deep learning, before most of this collection's creators had email - Scott Draves's screensaver network has bred abstract fractal animations by genetic algorithm: thousands of idle computers render the sheep, humans vote by pressing arrow keys when one delights them, and popular sheep breed, mutate, and pass on their parameters. Twenty-five years of continuous artificial evolution, steered by nothing but accumulated human delight.
The name is the Philip K. Dick joke fully earned: these are literally the dreams androids have while sleeping - your computer dozes off and joins a planetary flock. The aesthetic the swarm has evolved is unmistakable: swirling, symmetric, biological-mathematical forms that look like the deep-sea footage of some other universe. No one designed that style. It is what human preference looks like when compiled over decades.
It belongs here as the collection's deep ancestor. Every modern system that learns from human feedback is running Electric Sheep's loop at industrial scale: generate, collect preference, update, repeat. Draves built the pattern when the generator was fractal flame parameters and the reward signal was arrow keys, and then - this is the remarkable part - never stopped running it.
In a collection where sites die within the season, a 1999 artwork still breeding is almost geological. The sheep have outlived the browsers, the codecs, and several of the operating systems they slept on. Install it, press the up arrow at a sheep you love, and know that a quarter-century-old evolutionary line just felt your vote. Genuinely the slowest and most patient monkey we have.
